5 Social Media Mistakes Local Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

April 28, 2026 • By Kayla Bouffard

Social Media Should Build Trust, Not Just Fill a Feed

Social media done right builds real community around your business. Done wrong, it becomes a time sink with nothing to show for it.

Mistake 1: Posting Inconsistently

The algorithm rewards consistency above everything else. Set a realistic schedule — even three times a week — and stick to it. A steady cadence always outperforms occasional bursts of activity.

Mistake 2: Every Post Is a Promotion

Follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of your content should educate, entertain, or inspire. Only 20% should be promotional. If every post is an offer, your audience will tune out.

Mistake 3: Not Responding to Comments

Unanswered comments signal to the algorithm that you are not engaged. More importantly, they signal it to real people. Respond to every comment within 24 hours — this alone can significantly improve your organic reach.

Mistake 4: Identical Content on Every Platform

Instagram and Facebook have different audiences and different content formats. A long Facebook update does not translate well to Instagram. Tailor your content to each platform.

Mistake 5: No Clear Call to Action

Every post should tell people what to do next. Even something as simple as "call us" or "visit our website" gives your audience direction and measurably increases conversions.
