Why Your Website Needs to Be Fast (And What Happens When It Is Not)

January 05, 2026 • By Kayla Bouffard

Speed Is a Ranking Factor

Google officially uses page speed as a ranking signal for both desktop and mobile search. A slow website is not just frustrating for visitors — it is actively hurting your position in search results.

What the Numbers Say

Studies consistently show that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Every additional second of load time reduces conversions. For an e-commerce or service business, this translates directly into lost customers.

The Most Common Culprits

Uncompressed images are the number one cause of slow websites. A photo uploaded at full resolution from a smartphone can be 5–10 MB — far too large for a web page. Compress all images before uploading. Other common issues include too many plugins, unoptimized code, and hosting on a slow server.

How to Check Your Speed

Google's PageSpeed Insights tool is free and gives you a speed score for both mobile and desktop, along with specific recommendations. Aim for a score of 80 or above on mobile.

Mobile First Is Not Optional

More than 60% of searches now happen on mobile devices. If your website is hard to use on a phone — small text, buttons too close together, content that overflows the screen — you are losing the majority of your potential visitors before they even read a word.
